Hi everyone here is your February fishing report for Hernando county Florid.
Offshore action is very good we are targeting mangrove snappers, hog fish, sheepshead, grunts and triple tails on our 6-8 hour offshore trips anywhere from 18-25 miles offshore. Live shrimp rigged on a 1 ounce to 1 1/4 ounce hog ball jig laying on the bottom is producing some very nice hog fish ranging from 14-19 inches with a few studs mixed in. Mangrove snappers are chewing good on a 1/8-1/4 ounce hog ball at mid depth and on the bottom size of the mangrove snappers are ranging from 14-22 inches. Triple tails are holding on floating structures like crab makers, carb board, or anything floating a live shrimp rigged on a 1/0 hook tied with a 30 pound leader is all you need.
Inshore the sea trout are holding in 1-3 feet on grass flats and lime rock bottoms I like to use a mirr o lure 17MR in 808 & 50 color or the XL dines in broken glass in the 808 color or gold is great baits for trout. Also a soft plastic fluke in white, watermelon red, albino and Arkansas shad are all great colors. Red fish are holding with the trout and in the creeks a live shrimp or pin fish rigged with a 1/0-2/0 circle hook and a 25-30 pound leader is plenty for red fish and trout.
Soon very soon we will jump right into a spring/summer pattern the water temperature will climb fast and pilchards will show up on the flats, cobra and tarpon will arrive very soon as early as late March into April. Fishing action inshore and offshore is about to explode with crazy action. Please book fast with us we book out a month in advance.
